We are Greater Manchester Local Record Centre (GMLRC), part of Greater Manchester Ecology Unit (GMEU) and hosted by Tameside Metropolitan Borough Council (TMBC). We take the confidentiality of personal data seriously and we are dedicated to protecting the privacy of the people who use our services. What personal data do we hold and what do we do with it?

Mailing lists

If you opt-in to receive news we will store your name, email address and mailing preferences as part of a marketing dataset on our database server. This data is only available to current GMEU staff and the database server acts as the *only copy so that we can ensure we are always using the latest contact details and preferences. We hold this data for a single purpose, so that we can keep you informed about GMLRC and GMEU news, projects and events. You can change your preferences, or ask to be removed, at any time.

* We retain twenty-four hourly database backups for disaster recovery purposes. These would only ever be used to restore services to normal following a major systems incident.

Registered users

Registering as a gmwildlife user is free. Logging-in enables you to submit and report upon your biological records and to register to take part in our structured wildlife surveys. Registered users are also able to request data searches, book places on our events and submit articles and comments against selected site content. Before your account is activated you will be required to confirm your agreement with our site terms of use. Once registered we store the following personal data as part of a users dataset on our database server:

Comments that you post on public areas of the site are generally accessible and we encourage you to exercise caution if choosing to include personal data as part of a post. You retain the control to edit and delete posts to provide peace of mind.

How we protect your information

We take security seriously and we take precautions to keep your personal data secure. We have put in place appropriate physical, electronic and managerial procedures to safeguard the information we collect, including for instance requiring all website traffic to be encrypted (HTTPS) and regularly changing administrator level passwords. Although unauthorised access is highly unlikley, due to the open communication nature of the Internet, GMLRC cannot guarantee that all communications between you and, or information stored on the server, will be free from unauthorised access by third parties.
