Water Voles have undergone a massive decline in the UK, disappearing from 94% of their former sites. Fortunately, it is still found in a number of strongholds in the North West of England, but there is an urgent need to collect new data, as the last comprehensive surveys were carried out between 2008 and 2011 by the North West Lowlands Water Vole Project and in 2012-13 by the Cheshire Water Vole Project.

If you have an interest in water voles and would like to contribute to their conservation through monitoring their current distribution and populations across the Carbon Landscape then this workshop is definitely worth attending. It will be led by Tony Parker, County Mammal Recorder for Cheshire, Greater Manchester, Lancashire and Merseyside.

The Carbon Landscape Citizen Science Project wishes to recruit voluntary recorders to carry out structured surveys for water voles on key wetland sites across Salford, Warrington and Wigan. These sites are benefitting from habitat creation and restoration being undertaken by the Carbon Landscape Partnership.

Risley Moss SSSI/SAC still retains a healthy water vole population, so we expect to find the field signs used to identify their presence. As well as, learning how to survey for this charismatic, but threatened mammal, you will be able to sign up for a 1km survey square during the workshop.
